A gift of life's calling..

For the last few days, I have been finding myself driving back and forth that eastbluff drive doing parishioner activities. It so refreshing being around a different sense of wholesomeness. Smiles are genuine, many are giving their time for causes they actually believe in, and being surrounded by a spiritual wisdom through music.

I decided to cancel a family dinner to attend a catholic high school free concert this week. My parents and sisters seemed so busy so I just decided to stay home. I came in an hour early and got to see them rehearse. I felt like I was 16 again. I smiled.

Something about the echoing sound of voices in a hollow church. Perhaps influenced by the new gleek phenomenon on tv but I was amazed by the number of students involved in their school choir. I could easily count at least 500 students involved in the bell and chorale ensembles.

I remember performing in our a ccapella choir in high school and the bell choir. I felt a joke. Students are mean and they didn't care about our annual spring and holiday concerts. Being part of such groups then equates to being a loser for you were not accepted to play any sports. I must say it was perhaps one of the happiest moments of my high school life. We would sing at local businesses, christmas fairs, home carol-lings, and even senior homes. We became really close with each other. 2nd period every day is what I looked forward to every day in school.

I used to blame our teacher/director for the songs that she used to pick. I felt that the other students think it's boring and church-like. If it wasn't for her, I don't think I'd ever learn how to read notes or even appreciate songs in latin. She was gifted. I owe her an apology.

At the end of the concert, they called up the new assistant choir director. The students all stood up and cheered for her. She was adored. Through her eyes, she found her life's calling. I envied her. For kids at that age to like a teacher...wow..that's an accomplishment.

I am glad I found another salvation. Music found me again.
